The controversial flick is out tomorrow
The much-talked about Aaliyah biopic, Aaliyah: The Princess Of R&B, which nearly didn’t get off of the ground because of pushback from Aaliyah’s family and public outcry, is officially airing tomorrow at 8pm. You can watch the trailer above, which features Iggy Azalea’s “Goddess” as a theme song–as awkward as that is–and Alexandra Shipp (Switched At Birth, Drumline: A New Beat), who stepped in to fulfill the starring role of Aaliyah after the network’s initial choice, Zendaya Coleman, chose to walk away after citing several issues she had with the production of the film, not to mention the fact she came under immense fire from the public. What will make this film even more interesting is the producers were denied access to Aaliyah’s original, authentic catalog, meaning in order to represent the fallen star’s music in the movie, the producers had to find a way to re-create them using Shipp’s talents, or another alternate method.
